Dramaturgy
What is it?
As a production dramaturg, problem solving is an integral part of my role. I confer with a director (or other leading artist) and we form some framework for a theatrical production. My duty is to observe artistic choices and test whether they fit within that framework of the particular production. From there we either expand and rethink the framework itself to account for deviant or contradictory artistic choices or to redirect the given choice to fit within the previously established framework. This skeletal approach to dramaturgy-in-practice works outside the realm of theatre as well.
